About

Based out of Brooklyn, Jessie Novik is a Creative Arts Therapist, Teaching Artist, and Muralist with a masters degree in Art Therapy from Pratt Institute. She earned her BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2009 where she concentrated in painting and sculpture. Committed to the arts since childhood, Jessie began painting murals formally as a teaching artist in 2014 after assisting on a summer mural project inside the downstairs concourse of Rockefeller Center. Since then she’s been hooked, gradually developing a career which combines mural painting and Art Therapy. She has been teaching a course on their intersection at Pratt Institute since 2019 as part of the Expressive Modalities curriculum within the Art Therapy department. Some of her other notable worksites have included: Mt. Sinai Children's Hospital, 72+Sunny, Rikers Island, The Welling Ct. Mural Project, NYC Family Court, and many more.
Drawn towards imaginative realism, Jessie loves to paint landscapes and figures based on observation and travel, filtered through her rich imagination. Although she generally prefers traditional painting methods, her more loosely painted watercolor and pastel landscapes showcase her self-care practices. Particularly during times of heavy stress and/or global pandemics, Jessie indulges in the views from her neighborhood and the lucky moments when she has time to paint them.
Besides making art and fostering creative development in others, Jessie has a third degree black belt in karate, a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and she teaches self-defense to adults and children. Jessie is passionate about teaching practical skills and feels strongly that both art and martial arts uphold an infinite capacity for healing.
